From its very earliest days, sacred music has formed an integral part of the life of Notre Dame de Paris Cathedral. To be amidst the grandeur of this magnificent holy place as it fills with the transcendent sounds of sacred music is a stirring experience that will stay with you for a lifetime. This world renowned church and the exalting music that is performed there can be easily reached in a delightful five minute stroll from the Hotel BW Quartier Latin Panthéon.
The musical heritage of Notre Dame Cathedral
The Maîtrise Notre Dame de Paris, or Notre Dame Choir School, can trace its origins back to the 12th century, during the period when this superb example of French Gothic architecture was ascending towards the heavens. Noted for its magnificent polyphony, the choir has held to the highest degree of musical standards throughout succeeding generations. In 1991 the French State, the City of Paris and the Parisian Diocesan Association worked together to found Musique Sacrée at Notre Dame de Paris. This body is tasked with training singers and teaching music, organising the musical accompaniment of the cathedral’s liturgy and preparing recitals and concerts.
The December 2014 through to January 2015 season features a regular programme of choir and organ music. Sunday Masses between 11:30 am and 6:30 pm are sung by different choirs of the school. Vespers at 5:45 pm is sung by the choirs on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Guest choirs and organists from around the world can regularly be heard. There are also regularly scheduled concerts performed.
